Dermatocarpon miniatum is a small (usually less than 3-4 cm) umbilicate lichen common on rocks throughout foothills and montane habitats. Tiny black dots on the grayish thallus (use hand lens) are perithecia, imbedded vase-shaped spore-producing structures. Apothecia are absent in our species of Dermatocarpon.
