Umbilicaria americana, our largest umbilicate lichen, is sometimes abundant under rocky overhangs in montane areas. The smooth thallus has sooty black rhizines underneath and may be as much as 10 cm across. Known as "rock tripe," this and the similar species Umbilicaria vellea are said to be edible. Photo by J.
